Academic Instruction
First and foremost, our main focus is on developing a child's social skills in order to be successful in Kindergarten. Included in our social skills curriculum is a DHS approved safety curriculum. This curriculum teaches our students how to recognize and express their feelings, how to relate to others (in and out of the home) and how to keep themselves safe in their home and around their community. Play is an important part of our daily schedule. Several fun stations are set up in which a student can explore and use their imagination. Interacting with their peers help to improve their social skills in and out of the classroom.
In addition to developing social skills, our academic instruction developes visual, mathematics and language readiness as well as, fine and gross motor skills. BDS is known by many in the community where preschool aged children can receive both the academic and social training needed to be well prepared for Kindergarten.
Please keep in mind that each child advances at a different rate, and we cannot guarantee that each child will be ready for kindergarten when the State of Tennessee says they can attend. Underlying circumstances maybe unknown to either the parent or our staff which would hinder a student's progress. A child who is frequently absent or is immature for their age, will not progress as well as a child who is regular in their attendance and mature.

Math
We are proud to use Saxon Math as part of our advanced currriculum. Saxon's methods of teaching problem-solving, connecting concepts between lessons and frequent assessments has more than equiped our students for Kindergarten and beyond.
Language and Reading
Burns Day School began using Hooked on Phonics in 1995 and has been very pleased with its success rate among our students. Their program builds systematically from letters to sounds, then to words and sentences, and ultimately to reading fluency. Parents throughout the years never fail to comment on how well their child is able to read due in part to the strong foundation we gave them by using this reading program.
